That was PotatoEurope 2010 – with lots of positive feedback for K+S KALI GmbH, too!

The PotatoEurope 2010 took place on 8-9 September at Bockerode manor, in Springe-Mittelrode near Hanover, Germany. The PotatoEurope was organised by the German agricultural association (DLG), together with the German potato industry society (UNIKA) and K+S KALI GmbH.

Great international interest in potatoes

This year, too, the PotatoEurope was a hotspot for potato-professionals from all over the world. A total of 8,200 visitors from 42 countries flocked to this flagship event of the potato industry. According to the DLG, every second visitor came from abroad, with the Netherlands, Russia, Czechia, Austria, France, Denmark, Spain and Poland heading the statistics. But experts from Asia, North and South America, and Africa also used the PotatoEurope 2010 to exchange information and for expert discussions. Topics included :

The great number of international visitors is a clear indication of the potato’s potential for securing proper nutrition to a growing world population.

Potato Event: The official opening event of the PotatoEurope 2010

On the evening of 7 September 2010, the DLG hosted a great kick-off event in Hanover, the Potato Event. Dr. Ernst Andres represented the K+S KALI GmbH, the PotatoEurope 2010’s supporter, and welcomed the international guests.

Carl-Albrecht Bartmer, president of the DLG: “The PotatoEurope is a very impressive proof of the fact that agricultural procedures are subject to constant change. Modern crop production is getting more efficient, more productive, and therefore also more sustainable: High-yield varieties, greater accuracy of plant protection agents, greater efficiency in the application of nutrients, non-stress planting and caring, and particularly harvesting.” (Photograph: K+S KALI GmbH)

Martin Umhau, president of the German potato industry society (UNIKA): “In 2010, Bockerode is the most important meeting point of the European potato industry. And in 2010, it was even bigger than in 2006. 186 exhibitors from 16 countries represent a growth rate of 4% compared to the PotatoEurope 2006, which was also held at Bockerode. These numbers speak for themselves – and quite impressively so.” (Photograph: K+S KALI GmbH)

Dr. Ernst Andres, Senior Executive of K+S KALI GmbH: “For more than 100 years, the German potash industry has had a very special connection with potato cultivation. Potatoes have an exceptionally high demand of the nutrients potassium and magnesium. In potato farming, the relevance of these two nutrients for yield and quality of agricultural products is shown in an exemplary way. […] the reason why K+S KALI GmbH is committed to supporting the PotatoEurope: to us, cooperation with agriculture, agricultural research and consulting, as well as with the German agricultural association is a long-standing tradition. In her presentation, Dr. Pamela K. Anderson, Director General of the International Potato Center (CIP) in Lima, Peru, stated: “Potatoes serve as an antipole to excessive food prices. Internationally, they are not traded on a big scale, so they are not susceptible to speculation.” (Photograph: K+S KALI GmbH)

It was therefore beyond all question that K+S KALI GmbH committed to supporting the PotatoEurope 2010. As a supporter of the PotatoEurope 2010, K+S KALI GmbH was not only available at a fair booth, but also presented important potato-related research findings at a discussion forum. Facilitator Prof. Dr. Andreas Gransee: “Quality is important for marketing the products. For many years, K+S KALI GmbH has focussed on researching the influence of the nutrient supply on the potato’s composition.” (Photograph: K+S KALI GmbH)

Dr. Norbert U. Haase: “Producers of processing potatoes need to meet the requirements of their respective customers, both in terms of processing qualities and ingredients.” (Photograph: K+S KALI GmbH)

Prof. Dr. Joska Gerendas: “Potash deficiency increases the potato cell’s content of reducing sugars, decreasing its processing qualities.” (Photograph: K+S KALI GmbH)

Reinhard Elfrich: “As we could see this year, magnesium is an important nutrient for potatoes. After these damp weeks, potato plants with sufficient magnesium supply were much less damaged by Alternaria-fungus.” (Photograph: K+S KALI GmbH)

At the Forum: GTZ-event with Dr. Pamela K. Anderson, on the topic of “Potatoes – a driving force for rural development and food security, worldwide”

Dr. Pamela K. Anderson: “In African countries, potato cultivation is expanding faster than any other crop. It offers selling advantages on rural markets, it is extremely nutritious and rich in essential ingredients.” (Photograph: K+S KALI GmbH)

At the fair booth: Exchange of information, consultation and trials

At the PotatoEurope, the K+S KALI team of consultants enjoyed a great number of expert talks focusing on potatoes. (Photograph: K+S KALI GmbH)

In addition to general and also highly specific questions on potatoes, there were also conversations on nutrients supply, and therefore also on the potash and magnesium fertilisers offered by K+S KALI GmbH. (Photograph: K+S KALI GmbH)

Due to the international orientation of the PotatoEurope, K+S KALI-consultants from international offices used the opportunity to meet their customers at the fair booth, here K+S Polska and K+S Benelux. (Photograph: K+S KALI GmbH)

This allowed fair visitors to see for themselves the effects of potassium, magnesium, sulphur, manganese or boron deficiencies in potatoes. (Photograph: K+S KALI GmbH)

A novelty experience: For the first time, K+S KALI GmbH showed its deficient plants in see-through containers, so that root and spud development could also be evaluated. (Photograph: K+S KALI GmbH)

The Dutch trade magazine Aardappelwereld had raffled off two tickets to the PotatoEurope 2010 in Bockerode. As a special surprise, the lucky winners received one pit lamp each at the K+S KALI GmbH fair booth. (Left to right) Jaap Dellemann, editor of Aardappelwereld, Dr. Hans-Peter König, Agricultural Application Consultation K+S KALI GmbH, winners of the Dutch lottery Ap and Piet Louws, Dr. Wim Pacolet, K+S Benelux, as well as Dr. Jochen Köckler, Managing Director of the DLG. As expected, the drawing of that day’s winners of the K+S KALI GmbH summer sweepstake “Busy Hands” was held at 2 p.m. Until the very last minute, fair visitors took the opportunity to participate in the lottery. (Photograph: K+S KALI GmbH)

The lucky winners: Answering the prize question correctly resulted in a chance to win K+S KALI GmbH water bottles, K+S KALI GmbH bath salts or even a visit for two, to the Merkers Adventure Mine. (Photograph: K+S KALI GmbH)

Second day of the fair: A few highlights of the day at the K+S KALI GmbH stand

The second day of the fair was also characterised by a great demand for the K+S KALI GmbH team’s expertise. (Photograph: K+S KALI GmbH)

In addition to expert consultants, the K+S KALI GmbH fair booth also offered a wide range of brochures, on potato cultivation as well as on specific products. (Photograph: K+S KALI GmbH)

A special brochure on potato cultivation and nutrient demand was the item most in demand by fair visitors... (Photograph: K+S KALI GmbH)

... In parallel, the deficient plants served as on-site examples. Potatoes have an exceptionally high demand of the nutrient potassium. Potassium deficiency first shows on older leaves, later on symptoms also affect younger plant parts – this was easily detectable on the displayed plants. (Photograph: K+S KALI GmbH)

Clearly a lack of magnesium. This year saw an increased number of Alternaria-epidemics. Early blight is caused by a saprophyte, and is clearly identifiable by sharply outlined brownish-black spots on leaves, with spot diameters of up to 2 cm. (Photograph: K+S KALI GmbH)

Expertly guided tours to the world of potatoes – in this case with a group of Spanish visitors – focussed on the need for balanced plant nutrition. As we all know: Yield and quality determine the profitability of potato cultivation. (Photograph: K+S KALI GmbH)

In comparison: K+S KALI GmbH experts used their test fields to demonstrate potato cultivation without fertilisation, and potato plants fed with Patentkali (top). (Photograph: K+S KALI GmbH)

Exchange of ideas on an international level: Dr. Wolfgang Kasten, GTZ, Friedhelm Mester, head of Marketing Projects / Commercial Projects at K+S KALI GmbH, Dr. Karin Nichterlein, FAO, Dr. Stefan Schmitz, Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and Dr. Beate Deuker, K+S KALI GmbH Public Relations, discuss the relevance of potato cultivation for food security, in particular for developing economies, worldwide.
