PotatoEurope 2017: Focused Plant Nutrition More Important Than Ever Before, Especially for Countering the Effects of Extreme Weather

This year’s PotatoEurope 2017 trade fair at Emmelrood, the Netherlands, started one day later because of a storm warning. In the light of heavy rainfall and strong winds, it was decided that safety should take priority. Safety measures are also needed for plants in order to protect them from extreme weather conditions, such as rain, wind, late frosts but also drought.

Magnesium Stabilises Soil Structure

A good soil structure is required if instances of heavy rainfall are to be withstood over long periods. To maintain this structure, nutrients like Magnesium and Calcium are necessary. They can combine negatively charged clay minerals to create a crumbly structure. Fertilisation with Magnesium (ESTA Kieserit) and Calcium results in the flocculation of soil particles. Consequently, they protect against soil capping and compaction and therefore ensure optimal soil water balance.

Potassium Regulates Water Balance of Plants

Droughts are the opposite of periods of excessive rainfall. Regarding this Potassium plays an indispensable role. When the right amount of Potassium is used and is made available during the vegetation period, hardly any small tubers occur. Applying high amounts of Potassium ensures that ware potatoes and potatoes for industrial processing have the right underwater weight from a qualitative angle. This nutrient also has a positive effect on the sensitivity to black spot, because organic acids increase and, as a result, oxidation processes are checked. In addition, it strikingly improves the storage behaviour of potatoes. It is a question of keeping the tuber Potassium content on an appropriate level to achieve a high-quality harvest.

Improving the Resistance of Your Crops

Potassium and Magnesium increase resistance to stress, such as drought, and improve soil structure. In this way, it ensures an optimal water balance. Weather phenomena such has heavy rainfall and periods of drought were prevalent in the 2017 cultivation year and will continue to occur frequently over the upcoming years. Only a balanced fertilisation can ensure appropriate potato yields and quality over long periods, especially when climatic conditions are changing. Application of these nutrients makes a sustainable contribution to earnings. Therefore, Patentkali and EPSO Microtop form an unbeatable duo for your soil and leaf fertilisation.
