Pooling Knowledge for sustainability of oil palm

The knowledge of the importance of nutrients for sustainable oil palm production is incomplete .Therefore extensive experimental work has been dedicated many years. To evaluate these data K+S KALI GmbH, the International Plant Nutrition Institute (IPNI), the Institute of Applied Plant Nutrition (IAPN) and the Institute for Crop Production Systems in the Tropics of Georg August University Göttingen have started a common project. It aims to make a major contribution to the environmental and economic sustainability of the global oil palm industry.

Oil palms recover a fraction of the nutrients applied, yet little effort is made to measure the efficiency of fertilizers used in commercial operations. In addition, the rapid expansion of the oil palm industry in the last two decades has brought cultivation to new areas, with local conditions that may differ from those in previously studied areas. In these new geographies, basic information on nutrient uptake is unavailable, and models for fertilizer calculation are not available.

Acknowledging this issue, several research projects based on the 4R Nutrient Stewardship in commercial oil palm plantations have been implemented by IPNI supported by K+S KALI as member company between 2006 and 2016. To evaluate these data, K+S KALI GmbH, the International Plant Nutrition Institute (IPNI), the Institute of Applied Plant Nutrition (IAPN) and the Institute for Crop Production Systems in the Tropics of Georg August University Göttingen have startet a common 2-year-project. This collaboration aims to gain valuable information to make a major contribution to the environmental and economic sustainability of the global oil palm industry.
