Higher grain corn yields with Korn-Kali® on sandy soil in France

In the south-west of France, the region “Les Landes” is a very high yield area for grain corn. On a sandy soil (more than 90% sand), with low pH and high irrigation, yield can achieve 15t ha-1 grain corn.


In this area, the common fertilisation practice is:

  • Magnesium (Mg) and soil pH are managed with dolomite
  • 80 to 100kg diammonium phosphate (DAP)
  • 80 to 100kg K2O (in form of MOP)
  • 260 to 280kg nitrogen (N), in form of Urea

Some studies have evaluated the lixiviation of magnesium (Mg) between 80 to 150kg MgO ha-1 year-1. According to local observations, the response to sulphur (S) is limited (less than 0,1t ha-1).

Korn-Kali® or MOP?

In cooperation with “GRCETA des landes”, a regional agricultural research group, K+S KALI GmbH has run a field trial for four years in order to test the response of Korn-Kali® in comparison to MOP (KCl). In addition to potassium (K), Korn-Kali® contains magnesium (6% MgO), sodium (Na) (4% Na2O) und sulphur (12% SO3) as well.


Therefore, corn was fertilised with 50kg,100kg and 150kg Korn-Kali® or MOP, respectively.

The results show a good response to the rate of application. Among the MOP variants, 100kg of fertiliser effected the highest yields. This is true for Korn-Kali® as well.


Containing potassium (K) as well as magnesium sulphate, Korn-Kali® had an additional positive effect. Compared to MOP, the yield increased on an average of plus 0.3t ha-1. Those benefits are steady and have been verified yearly.
