Patentkali® shows high effect on orange yields in Spain
Spain is the 4th producer of citrus worldwide and market leader in Europe, with a production of 5 to 6 million tons per year. Spain generates 40% of worldwide production although the cultivated area of approximately 300,000 ha is smaller than in other countries. Main citrus growth areas are located in the south and east of the country, in the regions Valencia and Andalucia.
Among citrus in Spain, oranges are the leading variety with a production of more than 1 million tons per year. Organic production is growing in this sector due to a strong demand and price stability.
Fertilization with Patentkali® in Citrus
Patentkali® is common for fertilization in oranges and shows therefore a high potential in the market. In a field trial, K+S KALI GmbH shows the effect of Patentkali® on yield formation and nutrient content in soil and leaves.
In the field trial, Patentkali® achieved a yield increase of 13kg per tree (plus 47%) in the first year. To get more reliable results, it would be necessary to run the trial for some more seasons (at least 4 years).
Patentkali® increases potassium level in citrus leaves
The yield analysis was followed by an analysis of the nutrients in the leaves. It was evident that Patentkali® increases the potassium (K) level in the orange leaves. The magnesium (Mg) content was the same in both treatments.
The dosage of Mg should be increased during the next seasons because of slight Mg deficiency symptoms on older leaves. We observed also orange trees having deficiencies of manganese (Mn) and zinc (Zn), so EPSO Combitop® could be introduced next year for foliar application or fertigation.
