This year, the Bergmannssegen-Hugo works will celebrate its 100th anniversary. In order to celebrate this occasion, this production site, belonging to the K+S KALI GmbH, Kassel, will host an “Open Day”, on 1 August 2009. The event will take place both on the Hugo premises as well as at the works sector Friedrichshall (port facility).
A little more than 100 years ago, ambitious mining entrepreneur Dr. Wilhelm Sauer founded the production sites of Bergmannssegen and Hugo, after some promising potash findings. Initially, both were independent mining associations. In 1909, production commenced at the still-operating works Hugo in Sehnde-Ilten – exactly 100 years ago.
During its many years of existence, the works has experienced its share of ups and downs. Periods with increased production and crude salt excavation were alternated with temporary shutdowns. At peak periods, the plant employed more than 1,700 employees. Today, after the cessation of mining activities, 150 employees are engaged in refining raw materials delivered from all around the world, in order to create premium fertilisers for the agricultural industry. These products comprise so-called multi-nutrient fertilisers and NPK-fertilisers, granulated potash and magnesium single-nutrient fertilisers, as well as a host of special products – altogether a range of 50 different products.
The works Bergmannssegen-Hugo supports K+S KALI GmbH by continuously developing new products: for this purpose, a new granulating laboratory has been set up, which allows simulating production conditions at a smaller scale. Within the subsequent product development process, the prototypes are subjected to numerous tests at the granulation plants, systematically leading up to commercial operability.
