K+S KALI GmbH started a Research Collaboration Agreement with Sabanci University in Istanbul

Prof. Dr. Andreas Gransee, Head of Agricultural Advisory Department at K+S KALI GmbH, signed a research treaty between the Sabanci University and K+S KALI GmbH. This research agreement includes joint activities of research and education, with an emphasis on the further investigation of the role of magnesium supply to plant production. Special attention will be given to the role of magnesium supply to the reduction of stress caused by strong solar radiation and drought. The knowledge gleaned from this joint research undertaking shall be used for the development and application of innovative magnesium-based soil and foliage fertilisers. Beyond that, the agreement comprises the development of a wide range of teaching materials and training programmes, and the organisation of scientific seminars and workshops. The entire research and training programme is headed by Prof. Dr. Ismail Cakmak.

Prof. Dr. Gransee Signed the Research Agreement on Behalf of K+S KALI GmbH

Prof. Dr. Andreas Gransee has visited Sabanci University in Istanbul between November 21st and 22nd, 2010. Sabanci University is a private and non-profit research institution. It is considered to be one of the most innovative and research-oriented universities in Turkey. The Sabanci University is equipped with state-of-the-art research facilities, as well as an excellent environment for conducting agro-scientific research. The research team focusing on plant nutrition and nutritional physiology is headed by Prof. Dr. Ismail Cakmak.


The research agreement was signed by Prof. Dr. Gransee, on behalf of K+S KALI GmbH. The Sabanci University was represented by Prof. Dr. A. Nihat Berker (President of the Sabanci University), Prof. Dr. Albert Erkip (Dean Of the Department for Engineering and Natural Sciences), Dr. Cemil Arikan (Head of the Research and Academic Line ) and Prof. Dr. Ismail Cakmak (coordinator of the research cooperation between the Sabanci University and K+S KALI GmbH).

At various meetings, the President of the Sabanci University expressed great interest in a partnership with the newly founded Institute of Applied Plant Nutrition (IAPN), set up by K+S KALI GmbH together with the Georg-August-University Göttingen (Germany). For the near future it was agreed to organise a student exchange programme as well as joint research projects.

Prof. Dr. Cakmak is the Initiator and Creative Mind

Prof. Dr. Ismail Cakmak is the coordinator of the Collaborative Research Agreement between Sabanci University and K+S KALI GmbH. He earned his doctorate in Physiology of Plant Nutrition under Prof. Dr. Horst Marschner at the University Hohenheim in Stuttgart. He is an editorial member of the supervisory board, of the journals »Plant and Soil« and »European Journal of Agronomy«. Beyond that he is an honorary editor for the »Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems«. Prof. Dr. Cakmak has contributed to a UNESCO-publication, as the author of a chapter on the “Impacts of Agriculture on Human Health and Nutrition“. Between 1995 and 1998 he was member of the Board of Trustees of the CIMMYT. In 1999, Prof. Dr. Cakmak received the Research Award of the TUBITAK (Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey), followed by the Crop Nutrition Award of the IFA (International Fertilizer Industry Association) in 2005, and by the Derek Tribe Medal of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences Crawford Fund in 2007. So far, he has published 110 reviewed articles in international journals. More English-language information on his work is available on his homepage.
