At the 2. interim discussion of the European Initiative for Sustainable Development in Agriculture (FNL) on 21 January 2011, held at the adventure farm of the International Green Week, more than 50 top representatives of the German agricultural sector met for an exchange of ideas. K+S is a member of the FNL. This year’s topic was “Future Agriculture: Energy – Grown on German Fields?” K+S Executive Director Joachim Felker used the opportunity to present the issue from K+S’ point of view. His conclusion: “Agriculturally produced energy is part of the future of German agriculture; with its products, K+S is part of this future.”

As a preparation for this meeting, the FNL had conducted a representative survey of 1,000 German farmers, on the question of “Renewable Energy in German Agriculture”. The survey focused on the relevance of renewable energy to the total turnover of the agricultural businesses, and on the development potential attributed to renewable energy. The questionnaire also explored the possible conflict of goals, and its mitigation. Special attention was given to the question of which environmental protection measures farmers could take, in addition to the production of food and renewable energy sources.

The results of the survey and the discussion contributed to the “Berlin Declaration of the 2. Interim Discussion”.
