The new container terminal for combined transport (rail / road) in the Phillippsthal industrial area Röhrigshof, Germany started trial operations in the middle of this year. The “Werra-Kombi-Terminal” will raise transport efficiency of the potash and magnesium products from the Werra potash mine, to the seaports of Hamburg and Bremerhaven. It will also be available to other users.

“This new facility enables us to ship more via rail. This will help to further unburden roads from lorry transits,” says Heiko Heß, Executive Manager of the Werra-Kombi-Terminal Betriebsgesellschaft, a company of the K+S group, which operates the terminal together with the Rhein-Umschlag GmbH from Oldenburg. Both companies already cooperate in the joint inland waterway transport company Börde-Container-Feeder in Haldensleben near Magdeburg.

The facility currently has an effective use area of approx. 21,000 m², and in its first construction stage offers 2 turnover platforms with a length of 430 meters each. Expansion areas of more than 40,000 m² are available – in case of great demand it is possible to add one additional turnover platform/siding per month; additional crane capacities as well as empty depots for shipping and leasing companies are also possible options. “Intelligent synchronisation of the single construction segments will allow us to increase transhipment capacity without interrupting operations”, says Heiko Heß.
