Asia Dominates Worldwide Container Traffic
When an American citizen forwarded the very first 58 containers in 1956 he called them ´seagoing trucks´. His invention revolutionized the worldwide transport industry. Ships with a load capacity of more than 18,000TEU are now under construction. TEU stands for Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit, the 20-foot standard container. Shipping companies in Asia are already planning container vessels with a capacity of more than 20,000TEU.
Two thirds of the turnover of the container segment are generated en route to and from Asia
Asia clearly dominates international container traffic. 84 of the 108m TEU transported on major international maritime routes are transported either to or from Asia; of these, 25m TEU are transported between Asia and Europe, 36m are shipped within Asia and 23m TEU are traveling on transpacific routes between Asia and North America. Two thirds of the container segment´s total turnover are therefore generated on these transport routes. Transports from and to Latin America amount to only 9 percent of the total volume; transports to and from Africa generate 6 percent, while transatlantic routes make up only 5 percent.
