Underground fire brigade at the K+S KALI-site Zielitz relies on special equipment

In case of alarm, a speedy response is tremendously important. Rescue and salvage operations, and underground fire fighting require highly specialised equipment. This is why the Zielitz (Germany) Fire Brigade has from the onset paid great attention to technical innovation.

It has now expanded and upgraded its equipment pool: Shears and a spreader have now been added to the inventory. These hydraulically controlled rescue tools are used for extracting trapped accident victims from vehicles involved in underground accidents.

Technical innovation, high performance and fitness all play important roles in the lives of the Zielitz fire brigade

The Zielitz fire brigade is a leader in terms of the development of technical innovations. As early as 1978, it achieved recognition for its development of pneumatic dams for indirect fire control in mines. The patent for this innovation, which by now has become standard in many mining operations, has been held by the Zielitz works since 1980.

“In the last 40 years, our pool of technical equipment has grown to include 7 vehicles with special gear for fire-fighting and rescue operations,” says Crew Commander Rolf Knackmuhs. In addition to speedy response and innovative technology, fire-fighters also rely on their high performance capacity and physical fitness. In order to be able to work under extreme conditions and wearing respiratory protection, for several hours in a row, the 52 active members of the Zielitz fire brigade participate in a special training programme.

Additionally, regular practice missions help to keep everything functioning smoothly. “In case of emergency, everyone needs to know the routine like the back of his hand,” says Knackmuhs.
